Project description

During the first half of 2018 I had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with the artist Peter Allan Rice in St. Marys, Ontario to create a new website for him that showcases his work and makes it easy for people to connect with him. But it wouldn’t just be any website. I kind of understood that from the first time I saw one of Peter’s artworks. It was clear that not any website would make justice for Peter’s artworks, it would require something more.

So, looking at one of Peter’s pieces called Temagami Mist I started thinking about how to make it possible for website visitor’s to interact and immerse themselves more with Peter’s artwork. I told Peter that I would like to make the website more like an immersive experience for the visitors and at first he just laughed and didn’t expect too much but was willing to let me experiment with the idea, so he asked me to make him a demo. And I think he really loved what I then showed him.

From there came the animations and sound ambiences of the website. You can actually go in on the website and see Peter’s artworks come to life. Elements like for example, animals moving by on the screen and you can hear them bark out in the ambience of the wilderness. I also photographed some of Peter’s artwork in 360 degrees allowing visitors to go in and rotate the artwork and see them from different angles. On the page for Peter’s biography, you can find Peter working on one of his pieces.

It felt like a lot of things that I had learned during my years making websites, including for example manipulation of graphics and video making, came together to produce this website so I had a lot of fun with it. I also have to point out how amazing of a person Peter is. He is a fountain of creativity and has the ability to produce content and materials with very little effort at all, which makes him very easy to collaborate with.

Peter’s website was launched during the summer of 2018.
